How to improve stress management? The 3 steps of the persolog® method

Improving stress management means identifying your stressors, recognizing your reactions, and developing personalized strategies. The persolog® Stress Model, distributed exclusively by People Tools in Italy, is the scientific tool that provides a structured path for HR Managers, Coaches, and Trainers.

Why stress management has become a core professional skill

Stress has always been part of working life. However, in recent years, something has shifted: the speed, complexity, and unpredictability of the workplace have made chronic stress the norm, not the exception.

The data is clear: employees under chronic stress are less productive, get sick more often, take more absences, and leave companies sooner. For organizations, this translates into real, measurable costs.

The solution is not to eliminate stress—that is impossible. The solution is to develop "anti-stress competence": the ability to recognize your stressors, manage your reactions, and maintain balance even under pressure.

Positive vs. Negative stress: a key distinction

Not all stress is created equal. Research distinguishes between two types:

  • Eustress (Positive Stress): The tension that drives us to act, focus, and perform. It is the engine of growth.
  • Distress (Negative Stress): Chronic tension that exceeds our resources, leading to exhaustion and cognitive blocks.

The boundary between the two depends on one key factor: perceived control. When we feel we can influence a situation, stress becomes energy. When we feel powerless, it becomes a burden.

Developing anti-stress competence means shifting this perception through concrete tools, not just optimism.

The 3 steps of the persolog® Stress Model

The persolog® Stress Model consists of three progressive stages:

  • Step 1 – Identify Stressors: What exactly stresses you? Which situations, people, or thoughts trigger your stress response? Personal awareness is the essential starting point—you cannot manage what you do not know.
  • Step 2 – Recognize Reactions: How do you react under pressure? Physically, emotionally, behaviorally? Often, those around us notice our stress signals before we do. Looking in the mirror honestly—with the help of a coach or structured feedback—is the second step.
  • Step 3 – Develop Strategies: Which short-term techniques stabilize you in acute situations? Which long-term habits reduce your baseline stress? Effective strategies are always personalized—what works for a D-profile won't necessarily work for an S-profile.

Stress and the D-I-S-C behavioral profile

The persolog® D-I-S-C model reveals that every behavioral profile has specific stressors and characteristic reactions:

D — Dominant: Stressed by loss of control or bureaucratic delays. Reacts with irritability and impulsive decisions.

I — Influencing: Stressed by isolation or public criticism. Reacts with lack of focus and disorganization.

S — Steadiness: Stressed by sudden changes and interpersonal conflicts. Reacts with emotional blocks and withdrawal.

C — Conscientious: Stressed when results miss standards or information is lacking. Reacts with analysis paralysis and hyper-criticism.   Knowing your D-I-S-C profile allows you to anticipate stressors and build preventive, rather than just reactive, strategies.
